Little Snowball was often left to fend for herself. Her mother was a failed music hall singer who worked long hours as a machinist in a garment factory. Her father was killed when he was struck by a coal cart while crossing the street.

Snowball wet the bed up till the age of ten, and would often go to school faintly smelling of stale urine (she only had one dress). Her hair was often tangled and she was constantly sniffling.

After a series of menial jobs, Snowball worked as a chorine, sometimes slipping into prostitution before finally hitting pay dirt when her pretty face and lovely figure landed her a job as a follies girl, starring in such reviews as “Lillies of the Valley” and “My Friend Flora”
